Project: MAGNO - Conquering new strategies to prevent and reduce packaging pollution

DESCRIPTION: Europe is moving steadily towards a circular economy, more respectful of consumers and ecosystems. The EU-funded MAGNO project aims to improve the sustainability and efficiency of food packaging, promote directions for new policies and increase social innovation. The project will examine plastic packaging value chains and create an ecosystem digital twin to provide innovative and circular business strategies drawing a map of different scenarios ahead. MAGNO will use a multi-actor approach by involving researchers, food business operators, packaging producers, developers, converters, recyclers, consumers and local authorities to prevent and reduce plastic packaging pollution in Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. The project will support decision-making around food packaging, contributing to the European Green Deal and EU 2030 Climate Target Plan objectives.

HOLOSS ROLE:

HOLOSS develops a framework of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for monitoring the results of the projects, tracking the sustainability performance, economic viability, and social impact over time.

Under the leadership of HOLOSS, the environmental impacts are assessed through Life Cycle Assessment LCA of food plastic packaging use-cases, considering the linear and circular value chain.

Under the leadership of HOLOSS, the economic viability and cost efficiency are analysed using Life Cycle Costing (LCC) methodologies along the linear and circular value chain of the food plastic packaging use-cases.

Under the leadership of HOLOSS, the social impacts along the linear and circular value chain of food plastic packaging use cases are measured, using the Social Life Cycle Assessment (s-LCA) methodology.

HOLOSS, as workpackage leader and the main player in the sustainability in MAGNO consortium, defines strategies to make the transition from a linear to a circular value chain, considering the results obtained by LCA, LCC, and s-LCA. This leads to the consideration of End-of-Life (EoL) strategies and the circularity of materials through recycling, reuse, and recovery solutions.

HOLOSS is responsible for consumer and sustainability improvement through workshops, to educate and raise awareness among all the consumers of food plastic packaging.

HOLOSS ensures ethical compliance and gender balance in EU projects, integrating inclusivity and diversity principles.
